For many, cleaning the bathroom is a dreaded chore. Use our 10 step bathroom cleaning checklist to stay on top of the cleaning and make the tasks far less dreaded!
First, grab the essential cleaning supplies. It’s best to keep all your cleaning materials together in a caddy for easy storage and transport from bathroom to bathroom:
- Disinfectant sprays (store-bought or homemade)
- Glass cleaner
- Toilet bowl cleaning solution and brush
- Microfiber cloths
- Sponges (choose non-scratch sponges suitable for all bathroom surfaces)
- Bucket
- Wet mop
- Rubber gloves (optional but recommended)
- Clear the Area – Use a laundry basket to remove items that don’t belong in the bathroom, like shoes or dirty clothes. Set the basket outside and plan to return items to their places after cleaning. Set aside bath mats, soap dispensers, and the trash bin to clear your work area.
- Prepare Mop Water – Fill your mop bucket with a disinfectant and warm water mixture. Or, mix ¼ cup of mild dish soap with 1 gallon of warm water for a safe, effective cleaning solution.
- Clean the Toilet – Spray disinfectant on and around the toilet, including the seat, tank, and surrounding floor, and let it sit. Apply bowl cleaner inside the toilet and scrub with a brush. Wipe down the seat, tank, and surrounding areas with a microfiber cloth.
- Clean the Shower – Spray the shower and tub with soap scum remover and let it sit to allow the cleaner to work. Clean shower doors with glass cleaner, or address mildew on shower curtains with bleach or mildew killer.
- Clean the Sink and Vanity – Dust fixtures with a dry microfiber cloth or duster. Clean mirrors with glass cleaner. Spray disinfectant on countertops, sinks, and faucets, and let it sit. Wipe down cabinet faces, hardware, doorknobs, and light switches with a disinfectant-dampened cloth. Scrub any buildup around the sink drain.
- Change Towels – Replace washcloths, hand towels, bath towels, and other linens with fresh ones. Some prefer to do this more frequently than once a week.
- Clean the Floors – Sweep the floor. Mop with a wet mop or sponge, cleaning in sections and rinsing to avoid residue.
- Take Out the Trash – Replace the trash liner. If needed, disinfect the bin inside and out before adding a new liner.
- Replace Bathroom Items – Shake out and replace bath mats, vacuum rugs, and wipe down and return items like lotions and soap dispensers to their places.
- Handle Issues – Take inventory of bathroom supplies and note any issues that need to be handled, such as mildew in grout, clogged vents, which may require the attention of processional service companies, in particular from professional tile and grout cleaning companies, professional house cleaners, or even a good professional handyman service.
